About
Beginner art is a 1 hour class. We work on pieces of art that can last over a number of weeks!
In our upcoming art class, we will be creating pieces inspired
by the vibrant and expressive abstract works of Alma Thomas,
a pioneering African-American artist celebrated for her unique
style and impactful legacy. We'll explore Thomas’s signature
use of joyful, mosaic-like patterns and bright, precise
brushstrokes, which she derived from her appreciation of
nature and the cosmos. Our project will involve each student
choosing a natural or celestial theme as their muse and
reinterpreting it in Thomas's distinctive style, using bold colors
and dynamic compositions. This exercise promises to be not
only a creative exploration but also a meaningful homage to
one of the first African-American women to receive a solo
exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
If you purchase an apron with us, you can leave it with us each week or take home. Please dress for a mess to enable your child to fully enjoy the creative experience.
